Tracing logos by hand took way longer than I thought

Getting stuck on a simple conversion task

I really thought this would be a ten-minute job. I had this old, low-resolution PNG of a logo that I needed to scale up for a print job, and I naively assumed that ‘Image Trace’ in Illustrator would just snap it into a clean vector file instantly. I remember opening it up, clicking the default preset, and watching the software turn my logo into a jagged, unrecognizable mess. It wasn’t even close to the original. I started playing with the sliders—noise, corners, paths—but no matter what I did, the curves looked like they were drawn by a shaky hand. It was frustrating because I was just staring at a screen for forty minutes trying to make a piece of software understand that a circle is supposed to be a perfect circle, not a blob with six corners.

Why automatic tracing feels like a gamble

I kept thinking about how much we talk about AI these days, especially with things like DLSS 5 or these fancy new chips like the Snapdragon X Elite that handle complex motion vectors and real-time light rendering. If computers can figure out skin subsurface scattering or ray tracing in a video game in real-time, why does a basic logo tracing tool still struggle so much with simple geometry? I suppose it is because the ‘intelligence’ is applied to massive datasets for gaming, while my little logo just didn’t have the data density to be interpreted correctly. The software just sees pixel clusters, and without perfect contrast, it decides to guess the shapes based on whatever math it was taught, which clearly wasn’t ‘make this look like a clean corporate logo’.

Moving from auto-trace to manual anchor points

I eventually gave up on the automated route after wasting nearly an hour. I decided to pull up a fresh layer and just use the pen tool. I’ve never been a master of the pen tool, and honestly, the way I handle anchor points is probably embarrassing to any real designer. I zoom in to 400%, click, drag, adjust, and then realize the handle is too long. I repeat this process for every single curve. It cost me about two hours of actual work, plus the one hour I spent fighting the automatic tool. It felt incredibly low-tech compared to the hardware advancements everyone is raving about lately. There was no AI assistance here, just me, my mouse, and a lot of command-Z keystrokes.

The reality of cost versus time

I started wondering if I should have just paid someone on a freelance site to do this. I’ve seen people offering vectorization services for maybe 15,000 to 30,000 KRW, which is roughly 10 to 20 dollars depending on the complexity. If I consider that I spent three hours total on this, my hourly rate for myself was basically zero. It is one of those annoying realizations where you try to save money by doing it yourself, only to end up creating a bottleneck in your own workflow. The print shop needed the file by the next morning, so I didn’t really have the luxury of waiting for someone else to finish it, but sitting there at 2 AM tracing lines was definitely not how I planned to spend my Tuesday.

Is there really no middle ground?

I still feel uncertain about whether there is actually a tool that bridges this gap better than what I used. I know people suggest different websites that promise ‘AI-powered vectorization,’ but usually, those just run a script similar to the one in Illustrator and charge you a subscription for the privilege of using it. It feels like we are in this weird spot where the tech for rendering high-fidelity game environments is miles ahead, but for simple graphic design tasks, we are still relying on fairly basic algorithms. I saved the file, sent it off, and it printed fine, but I still look at the curves and wonder if they are perfectly smooth or if my manual labor left some subtle imperfections that only a designer would notice. Next time, I think I will just pay someone else to deal with the anchor points.
