Struggling to fix a messy logo file took my whole afternoon

Getting stuck on a simple file conversion

I really thought turning a simple PNG logo into an AI vector file would be a quick thirty-minute task. I have this old company logo that we only had as a low-resolution bitmap, and whenever I tried to print it on a brochure, it looked like a blurry disaster. I remembered someone mentioned using Inkscape for this kind of thing, and since it’s free, I figured I wouldn’t need to deal with any expensive subscription software. I downloaded the latest version, which took longer than I expected because my internet was acting up, and I just wanted to get it over with so I could stop thinking about it.

The reality of trace bitmap in Inkscape

Opening the file in Inkscape was easy enough, but actually getting the ‘Trace Bitmap’ function to behave was a completely different story. I spent way too much time adjusting the brightness cutoff and the scan settings. If I set it too high, the edges of the text looked like they were melting. If I set it too low, it missed half of the shapes entirely. It felt like I was poking at a dark room trying to find a light switch. I kept thinking about how much easier this might have been if I just had an automated tool that worked perfectly the first time, but of course, those tools usually cost money or require some complicated cloud setup.

Why the results still look a bit off

After about two hours of fiddling, I finally managed to get something that looked like a vector file. I saved it as an AI file, but when I opened it back up, the anchor points were an absolute mess. There were thousands of tiny, unnecessary nodes everywhere, making the file size feel unnecessarily heavy for such a simple graphic. It didn’t look nearly as clean as I imagined it would. I tried to clean it up manually for a while, but eventually, I just gave up and decided it was ‘good enough’ for the internal presentation I needed it for. It’s annoying because now every time I look at that logo on a screen, I notice where the curves are slightly wrong.

Comparing the effort to current tech hype

I read this article earlier about Nvidia’s new DLSS 5 graphics tech, talking about how they use motion vectors and AI models to make frame-by-frame rendering look perfectly realistic and consistent. Reading about that made me feel kind of silly for spending my whole Sunday fighting with Inkscape just to get a clean outline of a black-and-white shape. It’s funny how we have this incredible technology that can simulate realistic lighting and textures in real-time for high-end gaming, yet here I am, struggling to turn a basic pixelated file into something that won’t look like trash when I print it out at a decent size.

A nagging feeling about the workflow

I’m still not convinced I used the best method. Maybe I should have just asked a graphic designer friend to do it properly, but I hate bothering people for small things. I also looked at some online conversion services, but most of them wanted me to sign up for a monthly account or limited the file size, which felt like a massive overkill for one single logo. I ended up just keeping the file I made, even though it’s definitely not perfect. I still have this lingering doubt that if I tried to scale this up to a massive banner, it would reveal all the weird jagged edges I couldn’t smooth out. I guess for now, it’ll have to stay as it is, but I’m definitely not looking forward to doing this again for the next file.
